The Brighton & Hove Debating Society has been active in the area for over 50 years, promoting all forms of debate and discussion through our regular monthly debate and other special events. We are a diverse group with members of all ages, backgrounds, interests, careers, political and religious beliefs. Our membership truly reflects the cosmopolitan mix of the Brighton and Hove area and as Debators we strongly believe everyone has the right to air their views as long as they in turn listen to and respect the views of others who may disagree with them.
Our main speakers are drawn from our membership and from time to time we are joined by external speakers who are specialists in their areas. We have recently heard motions proposed by members of the academic community, local church leaders, representatives of various charities and other lobby groups.
Our Events
We hold a regular debate on the third Tuesday of every month. The programme for these debates is published six months in advance and offers a wide range of subjects.
Some motions cover topical issues and current affairs but we also debate moral and religious issues, philosophical topics and of course something more light hearted at Christmas time! Generally there is something for everyone. Anyone is welcome to suggest topics for debate – send your ideas to topics@debsoc.com.
See the “What’s Debating” section for more information on how a debate works.
We also hold smaller and less formal discussion evenings in members homes at least once a month.
Last but not least we organise a number of social events. These vary from year to year but always include an Annual Dinner and a Christmas Party. During the summer months members often organise rambles or similar events.
